Fracturing Orb, Orb of Sacrifice, and the Recombinator trap

Fracturing Orb permanently locks a modifier in place, Orb of Sacrifice upgrades Corruption enchantments at a cost, and the Recombinator exists in the game files but is switched off this league — a real trap if you're reading an older guide.

Currency — lock, divine, or close

Fracture is optional. Divine is last among the safe currencies. Vaal closes the item; Corrupted will not take Artificer's, so socket on the previous step. Orb of Sacrifice is a Corrupted-item side action. The Recombinator is off this league.

Why this step
Fracturing OrbVerified
Requires a Rare with 4 or more explicit modifiers. Randomly locks one existing line permanently — immune to Chaos, Annulment, and Divine. You do not choose which line. Only fracture when every remaining modifier is one you'd keep.
Divine, then VaalVerified
Divine Orb rerolls numeric values of modifiers already present, not which modifiers exist — no reason to use it before the list is final. Vaal Orb is the last irreversible step. Omen of Sanctification can push rolls past their normal maximum, then locks the item from further crafting.
Recombinator — disabledVerified
The Recombinator exists in the game files and is switched off for the Runes of Aldur league (0.5.x). Omen of Recombination was removed from the drop pool. If a guide's sequence includes it, skip that step.
Orb of Sacrifice (0.5.4)Verified
Four slot-specific variants (weapon, armour, jewellery, jewel). Only on a Rare, already-Corrupted item with an upgradeable Corruption enchantment. Upgrades that enchantment one tier and deletes one explicit modifier at random. Not part of the default spine — a Corrupted-item side action.

Why this lesson matters

These three tools sit outside the normal "add/remove a modifier" currency loop. Two of them are genuinely useful right now; the third is a trap specifically because so many guides written before this league still describe it as active. Knowing the current status of all three before you go looking for them saves you from chasing a mechanic that doesn't currently exist.

Fracturing Orb — permanent, unchanged

A Fracturing Orb requires a Rare item with 4 or more explicit modifiers. Using it randomly locks one existing modifier permanently — that modifier becomes immune to Chaos Orb, Orb of Annulment, and Divine Orb, for the rest of the item's life. You cannot use a Fracturing Orb twice on the same item.

This is a high-commitment tool: it's excellent for locking in a modifier you're certain you want, but it also locks in whatever it picks — you don't choose which modifier gets fractured, and a low roll on that modifier is now permanent. Standard advice is to only fracture an item once every remaining modifier on it is one you're happy to keep, since the orb can just as easily lock in your worst line as your best.

Fracturing Orbs drop from Cleansed-biome content and are a guaranteed drop from the "Immured Fury" boss encounter.

Orb of Sacrifice — new in 0.5.4

Orb of Sacrifice is a recent addition (patch 0.5.4) and comes in 4 slot-specific variants:

VariantApplies to
Yaomac's Orb of SacrificeWeapons
Kopec's Orb of SacrificeArmour
Kamasa's Orb of SacrificeAmulets, rings, belts
Yugul's Orb of SacrificeJewels

It only works on a Rare, already-Corrupted item that has an upgradeable Corruption Enchantment. Using it deterministically upgrades that enchantment to its next tier — but at a cost: it deletes one existing explicit modifier on the item at random. It's a genuine trade, not a pure upgrade, so weigh the enchantment tier gain against whatever modifier you might lose.

Orb of Sacrifice drops from Atziri's Vault, after defeating the Red Queen. As of patch 0.5.4b it's tradeable through the Currency Exchange.

The Recombinator — exists, but currently disabled

If you're reading an older PoE2 guide, this is the single biggest trap on this page. The Recombinator is a real mechanic that exists in the game — but it is currently disabled for the Runes of Aldur league (0.5.x). GGG's stated reasoning is that it would make top-tier gear too accessible in the first week of a league.

When it was active, the Recombinator worked like this: combine 2 items of the same item class, choose which modifiers to try to carry over from each, pay Expedition Artifacts scaled to item rarity, and get a percentage chance of success — both source items were destroyed on failure. Its supporting tool, Omen of Recombination, was removed from the drop pool and deleted from players' inventories on login.

Don't plan a build around Recombinator access, and don't trust a guide's Recombinator section without checking its publish date against the current patch first.

Practical tips

  • Only reach for a Fracturing Orb once you're satisfied with every modifier currently on the item — it locks in whatever it hits, good or bad, and you don't get to choose which one.
  • Orb of Sacrifice is specifically for Corrupted items with room to upgrade their enchantment — it has no use outside that narrow case, and it costs you a modifier every time.
  • If a guide, tool, or forum post mentions the Recombinator as something you can currently use, treat that as outdated information rather than following it — check this page or the game's own currency tab first.
