Poisonburst Arrow Acolyte of Chayula

Poisonburst Arrow starts a chain reaction of poison, bleed, and chaos explosions through Herald of Blood, Herald of Plague, and Repulsion, while Toxic Growth handles single target. Once you unlock the hidden Archon of Chayula ascendancy in the endgame, its Chaos Tornadoes wither enemies and detonate Toxic Growth pustules on spawn, pushing both clear and boss damage to absurd levels.

Act 1–4 gear on the doll is a Pathfinder-style leveling stand-in — Goratha's Maxroll planner only ships Interludes / Mapping / Min Max loadouts. Use the I / II switch on the doll — Set II is any talisman with Pounce until Interludes, then Amor Mandragora. Attack skills stay on the bow.

Ascendancy order

  1. First trial (Act 2, Sekhemas) → Waking Dream
  2. Second trial (Act 3, Chaos) → Lucid Dreaming → Choice of Power
  3. Third trial → Chayula's Gift
  4. Last trial (maps, after Tul and Esh) → Archon of Chayula
  • Waking Dream is the Act 2 pick. It grants Into the Breach, so Red / Blue / Purple flame Remnants start spawning. Purple (7% Damage Gained as Chaos) is the important one; Red is life leech, Blue is mana leech.
  • Lucid Dreaming is the Act 3 pick. Take Choice of Power over Choice of Life or Mana — Damage Gained as Chaos is one of the build's main multipliers.
  • Chayula's Gift is the third trial: +10% maximum Chaos Resistance and your Chaos Resistance is doubled. Mapping is when Goratha's tree takes it.
  • Archon of Chayula is the last trial, and only after you kill Tul and Esh in the endgame Breach questline. It grants the Archon buff and Chaos Tornadoes that wither and pop Toxic Growth.

Leveling & campaign stages

Act 1 — Riverbank to Ogham Manor

1–17 (approx.)
Poisonburst ArrowExplosive Grenade or TwisterVine ArrowHerald of Blood (spirit)Toxic Growth

Gear (self-found)

  • Whatever has good stats early — don't force poison/evasion items yet.
  • Prioritize flat damage on rings, gloves, and quiver as soon as you have slots for it.
  • Set II is any talisman that can socket Pounce — a white Changeling Talisman is enough.

Upgrades if you get lucky or can trade

  • Splinterheart (unique bow) if you find one — it's a common enough Act 1 drop to reasonably hope for, can be runeforged later (Act 4), and lasts well into maps. Not required; any rare bow with flat damage works fine in the meantime.

Tree

  • Grab "Increased Damage" nodes first: Concussive Attack, Blinding Strike, Killer Instinct.

Notes

  • Poisonburst Arrow is genuinely weak in Act 1 before Toxic Growth — leveling as Explosive Grenade or Twister instead is a completely legitimate alt path, not a downgrade.
  • Contagion is a fine cheap filler for clear in early Act 1, it falls off fast though.
  • Toxic Growth unlocks around level 14 (usually still inside Act 1) — this becomes your single-target skill immediately; link Concentrated Area right away, it makes the overlap much more forgiving.
  • Herald of Blood is your first spirit gem — keep it lower-level if you're short on attributes.
  • Keep upgrading Life and Mana flasks as higher-level bases drop — don't sit on the first ones.
  • Early charms are resistance only: Ruby (Fire), Sapphire (Cold), Topaz (Lightning). Swap to whichever the zone is punishing.

Act 2 — Vastiri Outskirts to The Dreadnought

17–27 (approx.)
Plague Bearer (spirit)

Gear (self-found)

  • Keep chasing flat damage on rings, gloves, quiver — this is still where most of your damage comes from at this stage.
  • Watch for any early Spirit on gear; you'll want it for Plague Bearer and later Herald of Plague.

Tree

  • Once Plague Bearer is running, start grabbing Poison Magnitude / additional-poison notables: Crippling, Stacking, Lasting, Leeching, Escalating, and Building Toxins.
  • First trial: take Waking Dream. Purple flames are the pickup — 7% Damage Gained as Chaos.

Notes

  • Plague Bearer has great synergy with Toxic Growth — one use pops the Pustules.
  • Rotation from here: spam Poisonburst Arrow for clear, weave in Vine Arrow + Toxic Growth on magic packs, use Plague Bearer's active once it's at 100%.
  • You'll need a Djinn Barya to enter the Trial of the Sekhemas later this act (first chance to get one is an optional Balbala kill; there's a backup in Deshar if you skip it) — completing the trial grants Waking Dream.
  • Keep upgrading flasks as you go. Extra charm slots are still resist charms — Ruby / Sapphire / Topaz for Fire, Cold, Lightning.

Act 3 — Sandswept Marsh to Ziggurat

27–35 (approx.)
Herald of Plague (spirit)Blasphemy + Repulsion (spirit)

Gear (self-found)

  • Repulsion doesn't scale off weapon damage — it scales off Quiver/Rings/Gloves flat damage, so keep prioritizing those.

Tree

  • Take First Teachings of the Keeper and First Principle of the Hollow — these unlock The Hollowkeeper (defensive) and are efficient pathing to the poison notables on the tree's edge anyway.
  • Second trial: Lucid Dreaming, then Choice of Power. Skip Choice of Life and Choice of Mana.

Notes

  • Herald of Plague is your third spirit gem — further spreads poison for clear.
  • Blasphemy + Repulsion come online once you have spare Spirit and enough Intelligence to support them.
  • Keep upgrading flasks as you go. Charms stay resistance-only through the campaign — Fire, Cold, Lightning.

Act 4 — Kingsmarch & The Four Islands

35–45 (approx.)

Gear (self-found)

  • Start watching for Spirit on Chest/Amulet — you'll want it soon for Blasphemy + Repulsion if you haven't picked those up yet.
  • Any rare bow with high flat physical/attack damage and attack speed works fine if you don't have Splinterheart.

Upgrades if you get lucky or can trade

  • Splinterheart (unique bow): if you're still using the one you found in Act 1, runeforge it now with Medved's Crest of the Circle — carries well into early maps.
  • Absent Amulet (Eternal Rage implicit): enables Tacati's Ire later and adds damage through Rage — a trade-league pickup, don't go out of your way to farm for it.

Notes

  • Core rotation and skill setup are stable by this point — this act is mostly about consolidating gear and attributes before Act 5/Interludes.
  • Keep upgrading flasks as you go. Charms are still Fire / Cold / Lightning resist until mapping.

Interludes — Mount Kriar, Ogham & Khari

45–55 (approx.)

Gear (self-found)

  • Start transitioning toward a high-Evasion body armor and a high-Energy-Shield helmet — any rare pair with those attributes is the goal, not a specific item.
  • Swap the leveling talisman for Amor Mandragora on Set II if you have it — still just a Pounce stick until Mapping.

Tree

  • Start pathing toward Remnant Attraction (pickup range) and the crit/defensive notables you'll lean on once mapping.
  • Subterfuge Mask and Spectral Ward are tree notables (EV per ES on helmet, ES per EV on body) — take them once you have a high-ES helm and high-EV chest, not unique items to buy.

Notes

  • This is the campaign's home stretch — Waking Dream and Choice of Power should already be allocated. Chayula's Gift and Archon of Chayula come with later trials.

Mapping

55–75 (approx.)
Poisonburst ArrowToxic GrowthVine ArrowHerald of Blood (spirit)Herald of Plague (spirit)Plague Bearer (spirit)Ghost Dance (spirit)Blasphemy (spirit)RepulsionArchon of ChayulaInto the Breach

Gear (self-found)

  • High-Evasion body armor + high-ES helmet — any rare pair with those attributes works; the uniques below are upgrades, not requirements.
  • Flat damage still on Gloves, Rings, Quiver. Attack speed on Quiver is ideal.
  • +Projectile Levels wherever you can get them on rare gear (Amulet, Bow, Quiver, Gloves).
  • More Spirit on gear lets Ghost Dance replace Pounce eventually — a nice-to-have, not required.
  • Craft your helmet with Cyclonic Alloy — greatly improves Archon of Chayula uptime. This is a craft you do yourself at the bench, not an RNG drop.
  • Cheap Amulet instill: Serrated Edges for damage, or Beastial Skin defensively, before it's on the tree — a small currency spend, not a rare-drop dependency.

Upgrades if you get lucky or can trade

  • Idol of Thruldana (unique idol, +1 poison cap) socketed in your bow, and Countess Seske's Rune of Archery (+1 projectile, aim for 100% Surpassing Chance for a 3rd) — both farmed/traded items.
  • Remnant effect on Rings/Amulet (Omen of the Liege + Preserved Collarbone combo) and Rune of Reach in the helmet — amplifies the Purple Flame Remnants once you have the currency or trade access for them.

Tree

  • Set up Weapon Sets properly: Set II is entirely Remnant nodes, used only to "snapshot" them on zone entry (swap in, zone in, swap back to Set I).
  • Bind a key to swap sets manually; put a Wolf Form Talisman in Set II for the movement speed and as a visual reminder you're in the snapshot set.
  • Set I is used for everything else — prioritize damage notables like Master Fletching here.
  • Subterfuge Mask and Spectral Ward are on this tree — EV per 1 ES on your helmet, and +1 ES per 12 EV on your chest. High-ES helm + high-EV body make them worth it; they are not unique items.

Notes

  • Poison III / Bursting Plague / Bleed III on your clear abilities keeps spreading Herald of Blood explosions.
  • Living Lightning II on Blasphemy + Repulsion lets any lightning hit summon minions that proc Repulsion.
  • Once you have Archon of Chayula, link it to Prolonged Duration II so the Chaos Tornadoes last longer — they also detonate Toxic Growth pustules on spawn.
  • For single-target bosses you can swap Repulsion out for Despair.

Archon of ChayulaInto the BreachPoisonburst ArrowWind Dancer (spirit)Herald of Plague (spirit)Plague Bearer (spirit)Blasphemy (spirit)RepulsionHerald of Blood (spirit)Ghost Dance (spirit)Toxic GrowthVine Arrow

Gear (self-found)

  • Pivot Non-Crit → Crit once you can hit ~50% Critical Strike Chance on gear (unlocks Garukhan's Resolve on Toxic Growth — expensive, not worth it below that threshold).
  • As much Evasion/Spirit as possible on Body Armor.
  • 50%+ Critical Strike chance on Helmet, Quiver, and Amulet.
  • Bow: as much Physical Damage as possible, plus Critical Strike Chance and Onslaught on Kill. +Projectile Skill Levels are good but not required.
  • Rite of Passage instill — Cat is best, Serpent is a cheaper alternative with good damage.

Upgrades if you get lucky or can trade

  • Craiceann's Rune of Warding socketed — combined with The Hollowkeeper (a tree/ascendancy notable, not an item), gives curse immunity. The rune itself is a farmed/traded drop.
  • Absent Amulet with the Eternal Rage implicit — enables Tacati's Ire support; trade-league pickup.
  • Dominion instill for ~100% Archon of Chayula uptime (bypasses the 20s lockout at reduced buff strength) — a specific instill, treat as a later goal once you have currency to spare.
  • Belt: Mageblood or Headhunter at very high gear levels (fall back to a rare belt + Diamond Flask if you're not there yet) — among the rarest, most expensive items in the game; don't expect these on a first character, self-found or not.

Tree

  • Add crit notables: Heartstopping, Heartbreaking, Struck Through, True Strike, For the Jugular.
  • Time-Lost Emerald (Large Radius) near Dizzying Hits and Stupefy is a big power spike — prioritize Critical Strike Chance and Critical Strike Damage Bonus on it.
  • Defensive option: Enhanced Reflexes and Beastial Skin.
  • Movement speed nodes near the ranger start become worth it at this stage.

Notes

  • Choice of Power (Damage Gained as Chaos) is the build's single biggest multiplier — stacked with Purple Flame Remnants and Remnant effect gear.
  • Archon of Chayula rotation: use it whenever available (needs Glory, builds in ~1s of attacking), cast Vine Arrow a few times, use Toxic Growth every other attack while tornadoes are up, then rotate Toxic Growth/Plague Bearer for the rest.
  • Never recast Toxic Growth before the first Pustules explode — it destroys them (Archon of Chayula tornadoes are the exception; they pop pustules instantly on spawn).
  • If damage feels low: check flat damage on rings/quiver/gloves and bow damage first, and make sure Toxic Growth is linked to Concentrated Area.

Story rewards worth grabbing

  • Act 2 — Valley of the Titans (Medallion): 30% increased Charm Charges Gained / +1 Charm Slot
  • Act 3 — Venom Crypts (Venom Draught): 25% increased Stun Threshold
  • Act 4 — Halls of the Dead (Tawhoa's Test): +5 to Dexterity
  • Act 4 — Halls of the Dead (Tasalio's Test): +5 to Intelligence
  • Act 4 — Halls of the Dead (Ngamahu's Test): +5 to Strength
  • Act 4 — Abandoned Prison (Goddess of Justice): 30% increased Life Recovery from Flasks
  • Act 4 — Whakapanu Island (Great White One): 30% increased Armour, Evasion, and Energy Shield
  • Interlude 2 — Qimah (Seven Pillars): 3% increased Movement Speed

FAQ

Poisonburst Arrow sucks in Act 1, do I need to level with it?

No. It lacks single-target damage until Toxic Growth unlocks (~level 14). It's technically doable even without gear, but leveling as Explosive Grenade or Twister for Act 1 is easier.

How does "Snapshotting" Remnants work?

Entering a zone while in Weapon Set II (which holds all the Remnant nodes) snapshots those nodes for the entire zone. If you accidentally zone in on Weapon Set I, relog or re-enter the zone to fix it.

My damage is low, what am I doing wrong?

Using Toxic Growth without Concentrated Area makes overlaps much worse. Only recast Toxic Growth after the first Pustules explode. Prioritize flat damage on Rings, Quiver, and Gloves, plus raw damage on the Bow — that's where most of the build's damage comes from.
