An Abyssal Bone being used at the Well of Souls to add a Desecrated modifier

Desecration & the Well of Souls

The Well of Souls turns Abyssal Bones into a guaranteed second anchor modifier — including exclusive mods tied to three Abyssal Lich bosses. Core content since patch 0.3.0, not a league-limited mechanic.

Arm an Omen before you apply. Putrefaction waits until you have revealed one Desecrated line — then it replaces every modifier with six unrevealed lines and corrupts the item.

Why this step
How it worksVerified
Right-click an Abyssal Bone onto a Rare to add a hidden Desecrated modifier. At the Well of Souls (Act 2, via Mastodon Badlands → Lightless Passage) you reveal 3 options and choose 1. Core content since 0.3.0, still active in 0.5.4.
Early vs late — genuine disagreementVerified
Desecrate early (right after the crafted slot) to avoid overwriting a random mod on a full 6-mod item. Desecrate late (after Fill) to see the Exalt rolls first. Walk Desecrate on a 1-mod item vs a 6-mod item — that is the disagreement. Experienced crafters actually do both; this is not a case where we pick a winner. Alchemy can land you on Rare with no crafted line — the Well still works; Perfect Essence can still write the crafted slot afterward.
The overwrite riskSingle-source
If the item is already at its modifier cap (6 on most rares, 4 on jewels), the hidden Desecrated line overwrites one existing modifier at random to make room. It does not destroy the item. Desecration on Corrupted or Sanctified items is reported as blocked — single-sourced, treat as likely but unverified.
Bone familiesVerified
Jawbone: weapons and quivers. Rib: armour. Collarbone: amulets, rings, belts. Cranium: jewels. Preserved Vertebrae is a real item; Waystone targeting is still single-sourced. Gnawed is capped at item level 64. Preserved is unconstrained. Ancient guarantees a minimum modifier level of 40.
Omens on this stepVerified
Sinistral/Dextral Necromancy force prefix or suffix. Abyssal Echoes rerolls the 3 options once. Blackblooded / Liege / Sovereign lock the draw to Kurgal / Amanamu / Ulaman. Putrefaction waits until you have revealed one Desecrated line — then the next bone replaces every modifier with up to six unrevealed Desecrated lines and corrupts the item. Reveal each 1 of 3 at the Well. Necromancy does not apply to that replace-all.

Why this lesson matters

Desecration is your second guaranteed "anchor" modifier — the only other fully reliable slot on an item besides an Essence or Alloy's crafted slot (see How Crafting Works). It's also the only way to reach three boss-exclusive modifier pools that don't drop any other way.

This isn't a temporary league mechanic. It launched with the "Rise of the Abyssal" event in patch 0.3.0 and was folded into permanent core Atlas content with 0.5.0 — it's still fully active as of 0.5.4, independent of whatever the current challenge league is.

Where to find it

The Well of Souls is located in Act 2, reached through Mastodon Badlands → Lightless Passage, and is operated by an NPC referred to as "The Lurking Creature."

How it works

  1. Find an Abyssal Bone (drops from closing Abyss cracks encountered in maps and the campaign).
  2. Right-click the bone onto a Rare item. This adds a hidden Desecrated modifier — it occupies a prefix or suffix slot immediately, even before you know what it is.
  3. Take the item to the Well of Souls and "reveal" it. You'll be offered 3 possible Desecrated modifiers and choose 1.

That reveal-3-choose-1 step is what makes Desecration a genuine anchor rather than pure randomness — you don't get to pick the exact modifier from the full pool, but you do get to reject two options you don't want.

What makes these modifiers special

Desecrated modifiers include some ordinary-tier affixes that are otherwise hard to target directly, plus three modifier pools that are exclusive to this mechanic — tied to three Abyssal Lich bosses:

  • Kurgal — mana, cooldown recovery, and spell damage modifiers.
  • Amanamu — defensive, curse, and elemental modifiers.
  • Ulaman — damage, ailment, and projectile modifiers.

If a build guide calls for a "Kurgal mod" or similar, this is what it means — a modifier only obtainable through Desecration, not from any drop table.

Bone families and tiers

Bones are named for the item slot they target:

Bone familyTargets
JawboneWeapons, quivers
RibArmour
CollarboneAmulets, rings, belts
CraniumJewels

Some sources also mention a Waystone-targeted bone family (referred to as "Preserved Vertebrae"). The item name itself is now confirmed real — it's listed on poe2wiki.net's own Abyss item category — but which slot it targets (Waystones specifically) is still single-sourced in our research and not independently confirmed. Treat the item as real and the Waystone-targeting claim as unverified.

Bones also come in three power tiers:

  • Gnawed — the lowest tier, capped at item level 64, the version you'll find during the campaign.
  • Preserved — mid tier, works at any item level, offers a random selection from the full pool.
  • Ancient — the highest tier, guarantees a minimum modifier level of 40.

The real risk: overwriting an existing mod

If the item you're desecrating already has all 6 modifiers, adding a Desecrated modifier overwrites one existing modifier at random to make room for it. This is a genuine risk on expensive, mostly-finished gear — you could lose a good roll you already have. It does not destroy the item outright, but it's not a free action on a full item either. Plan your desecration step (see the sequencing discussion in the upcoming Strategy lesson) with this in mind — many crafters desecrate early, before the item's other slots are filled, specifically to avoid this risk.

One additional restriction reported in our research (single-sourced, not independently confirmed elsewhere): Desecration reportedly cannot be used on Corrupted or Sanctified items. Treat this as likely-true but unverified until corroborated.

Practical tips

  • Desecrating early (before other modifiers fill the item) avoids the overwrite risk entirely — a common reason guides sequence Desecration as an early step rather than a late one.
  • Use the Omens page to see how Sinistral/Dextral Necromancy Omens can force a Desecrated modifier to be prefix- or suffix-only, and how Omen of Abyssal Echoes lets you reroll the 3 offered options once if none of them are acceptable.
  • The three boss-exclusive mod pools (Kurgal/Amanamu/Ulaman) are worth checking against your build before you desecrate — some Omens (Omen of the Blackblooded/Liege/Sovereign) can guarantee which boss's pool you draw from.
  • Don't confuse this with a league mechanic that might disappear — it's core content as of 0.5.4 and has been since 0.5.0.
